Rock Island Email – Servers and Port Settings

The below servers and ports are the required settings for @rockisland.com email addresses.

Should I Pick POP or IMAP For My Email Settings?

POP and IMAP are two different protocols (methods) for accessing your email.  Which one is right for you?

Generally speaking, IMAP is newer and widely seen as being more full-featured.  This is especially true if you check your email from multiple devices, like a phone, tablet and laptop.

IMAP is better at ensuring that your email is synchronized across your devices.  Using IMAP, if you delete a message on one device, it will be deleted on the rest of them.  If you send an email from your laptop, that sent item will be visible on your phone, etc.

POP is older but still very useful.  Using POP, all of your messages are downloaded to your device and then (usually) deleted from the server.  This means that once messages are downloaded to a laptop, you can check email using your phone and will not see the messages as they have moved to the laptop.  We say usually deleted from the server because some email clients allow for messages to be left on the server where they build up over time.

Most email clients allow for either POP or IMAP and the choice of which to use is a personal one, although most people tend to settle on IMAP, given the higher degree of synching that it allows.
