Long Term Evolution (LTE) Fixed Wireless Internet
Rock Island LTE Fixed Wireless is designed to extend service to areas hard to reach. It is a dependable service designed to meets the needs of everyday users. Speeds will vary from area to area and home to home depending on topography between our LTE sites and your home.
LTE, or Long Term Evolution, is a type of wireless technology. More specifically, it’s a 4G wireless communications standard developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) that’s designed to provide up to 10x the speeds of 3G networks for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks and wireless hotspots.
By fusing power, fiber, LTE radios and private signal spectrum, Rock Island has brought this new product to San Juan County that is truly nation-leading in all respects. Designed to serve thousands and last for decades, our LTE Fixed Wireless product provides stable wireless connectivity to all who are eligible, at speeds of ~10mbps down and ~1mbps up. While not quite a speed demon compared to fiber optic broadband, LTE Wireless is a massive upgrade to people in the county struggling with 1mbps connections.
This is a limited resource, and not everyone in the county can order LTE Wireless. As such, we have diligently qualified homes who can receive it based on a series of criteria such as distance to the OPALCO fiber backbone, last mile cost, current fiber group engagement, Century Link exhaustion areas and more. We provide the community with a list of people who qualify for this program and keep it updated as new sites come online.
There are currently over 20 Rock Island LTE sites live in the county at the moment, with more coming online all the time. By the end of 2017 we plan on having a total of 38 sites, with almost 100% coverage in the county. Find out if you qualify for LTE Wireless on our LTE Eligibility Search page. Follow the instructions there based on your results.
Note: Port Forwarding is not supported with our LTE Fixed Wireless service.
