Monthly Fiber Update: September

Hello Neighbor,

It’s time for another update on our fiber rollout and more from your local friends at Rock Island. What a summer we had! We hope you all had a great time over the past month, and hope you are gearing up for a productive and fun fall.

As a reminder, this email series has been designed to help update folks on our fiber initiative. We’ll continue to send out information every month to keep you up to date on our project, and let you know how to get involved if you choose to do so.

If you missed prior editions, you can read them here. If you prefer not to receive these updates, simply click the “unsubscribe from this list” link at the bottom of this email.

Our Group Fiber Projects

The Rock Island team is deeply engaged in several fiber construction projects throughout the county as we head toward the fall. So far in 2016 we have brought an average of 5 new customers online per business day, and we have no plans on slowing down (to both fiber and LTE Fixed Wireless). No other project of this scale has ever been rolled-out in our county to date at this pace, and we’re proud to be leading the effort in this historic event!

Here is our current project list. Please note, we only list groups who have made it through our group organizing process, and have placed a down-payment on their middle mile build.

Current Projects:

These are groups that have gone through the fiber organizing process, paid for their middle miles and are currently under construction to get fiber to their homes or businesses.

  • Downtown Eastsound on Orcas Island
  • Harney View Park on Orcas Island
  • Cape San Juan Part 2 on San Juan Island
  • Portland Fair Area on San Juan Island
  • Roche Harbor Village on San Juan Island
  • Salmon Point on Lopez Island
  • Elderberry on Orcas Island

Upcoming Projects:

These are groups that have gone through the fiber organizing process and are waiting to be scheduled by our construction team.

Become a Fiber Group Organizer and Get Fiber into Your Community!

Calling all leaders! Find out what it takes to organize and lead a community group through the process of getting reliable, high-speed, fiber-optic broadband into your neighborhood at the best possible price.

Groups may be formal homeowners, road or water user associations or simply groups of neighbors who come together to share the costs of deploying infrastructure to their neighborhoods.

The construction effort for building a modern, reliable fiber-optic network around San Juan County and in your community requires a joint effort between you, your neighbors and Rock Island Communications. The more people who get involved and share expenses, the lower the per-property cost.

If you are a member of an organized water, road, homeowners, or other neighborhood-based association, approach your group’s leadership about putting together a plan to connect to fiber and about being their designated fiber group organizer.

No association? No problem. Simply poll your neighbors to see if you can establish a fiber group. Once you have a large enough group, designate a fiber group organizer (which might be YOU) and contact Rock Island to move the process forward.

As a fiber group organizer, you become the primary contact between your group and Rock Island. The time commitment will depend upon the size of your fiber group and the complexity of your project.

Our New North Blakely Site Under Construction

Our LTE Fixed Wireless Rollout

We’ve been very busy this year rolling out a Fixed LTE Wireless network designed to support a few goals including: providing Fixed Wireless Internet access to homes and businesses, vital communications to our first responder community, and last, to provide cell phone coverage to those who want and need it (via T-Mobile).

We currently have 19 wireless sites live throughout the county, with an additional 4 coming online in the coming weeks. This means that literally hundreds of households and businesses across the county – in the farthest backroads to outer islands – can receive blazing broadband with the flip of a switch right now or very soon.

We have been busy getting the word out on our LTE Fixed Wireless product this summer, so if you haven’t heard the good news, there is a new Internet option in town. If this sounds exciting to you, or someone else you know in the islands, give us a call today to discuss your connectivity options at: 360-298-7216

Email Woes

If you are one of the roughly 1,500 active email account holders of a email account, we thank you for your patience over the past week. We encountered a significant email outage last week that took us several days to resolve.

The core of the issue was a database syncing problem that caused a significant backup of email (approximately 80,000 emails total). Once we resolved our software problem, we needed to process our email backlog carefully to separate spam from real email. Ultimately, this processing caused a multi-day delay in email delivery.

The Rock Island Network Engineering team worked diligently on the problem, and for stretches of up to 24 hours at a time without sleep to resolve this problem. They continue to work on bolstering our email systems even now, and to insure an outage like this never happens again in the future.

We wanted to take a little extra time in this email to thank you for your patience and for keeping engaged as we worked our way through this outage. Please know it is very much appreciated.
