Monthly Fiber Update: June 2018
YES – It’s Working!
The blue dots are new fiber customers joining Rock Island’s gig-capable fiber Internet service. The black dots are new LTE Fixed Wireless customers connecting.
We connected our first fiber customers mid-2015, and our first LTE Fixed Wireless customers in December of 2015. Since then, in about three years, we’ve connected over 30% of the county to faster broadband – and that includes outer islands and some of the most remote places in the county. Rock Island took on the mission to solve the Internet crisis in our county, and that’s exactly what we did at a break-neck speed.
Our LTE deployment keeps growing throughout the county too. We recently launched a new site on top of our Friday Harbor office that’s bringing whopping service to both our LTE Fixed Wireless customers and T-Mobile phone users in the area, as well as a new site just last week at the Orcas Island Ferry Landing. That makes 34 new sites online now in total.
Average speeds in the US since 2007 per Akami.
The average Internet speeds in the county were between 2-4 Mbps when we started our efforts. Internet service at these speeds is dismal, and includes waiting forever for emails to show up, or for important computer updates to download. You’d be waiting a lifetime for a movie to stream and become intimate with the word “buffering.” And that’s just the speed problem. That doesn’t include what’s more frustrating for some customers which was the unreliability of the Internet. Many people in the county couldn’t access the Internet at all at certain times of the day. We met plenty of people at Cape San Juan on SJI, Spring Point on OI, and basically all of Lopez who had some parts of the day when the Internet just wasn’t available. One click would be fine and the next, nothing… Yuck!
The average Internet speeds across our customer base is currently higher than the national average of 18.75 – right around 20 Mbps in fact, and capable of up to 1,000 Mbps with fiber. So if you are looking for relief, and still haven’t found your way to Internet nirvana, give us a call and we will get you on a path to faster service immediately. If we haven’t blazed a trail your way yet, don’t worry, the odds are that we’ll be near you soon.
Try LTE Fixed Wireless
A lot of people don’t know how easy it is to try our LTE FIxed Wireless Internet. Setup is quick; it takes about 5 minutes for the device to boot up in your home or office, and voila! – faster Internet! There’re no contracts and every connection comes with a 30-day money back guarantee in case it isn’t a good fit. So give it a try; you’ve got nothing to lose.
Getting connected to our LTE Fixed Wireless network is simple.
1. Check your eligibility on our site to see if you can get service
2. Come down to a Rock Island retail store, or call us and we can come to you
3. Plug in your new device and connect to the Internet
It’s that easy, and our Tech Support staff is now available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week! No one else in the county does that, and probably never will.
Gig Internet is Here!
You can now get Gigabit Internet in your home!
After a lot of hard work and network upgrades all over the county, we’re proud to announce our new Gigabit plan for residential customers! Can you imagine what it would feel like to go from 2–4 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps?
We increased speeds across our entire fiber-optic product line recenty, with a range of symmetrical rate plans from 30 Mbps, 75 Mbps, 500 Mbps to a Gigabit (1,000 Mbps). Prices for full-time residents still range from $80 to $180 per month, but now include up to $60/month of value-added products and services including a managed mesh network Wi-Fi system, Rock Island email addresses, cyber-security coverage for devices, and cloud backup and storage. Bonus items vary based on rate plan selection.
If you’re a current fiber customer and want to get more value for the same price or less, contact us today.
A Party to Say Thank You
Mark your calendars for a celebration party on June 29th, from 12 – 5 pm. We’re rolling out the red carpet once again as a thank you to our community for all your support in Friday Harbor, and throughout the county!
We’ll be cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs and have plenty of drinks and chips – all for free. Come on down and grab some lunch and let us shake your hand. We feel lucky to have been greeted so warmly in the community since our relaunch of the Rock Island store. We’ve been connecting LTE customers and setting folks up with T-Mobile phone plans for almost one year now and the journey has been fantastic!
OK y’all, that concludes one more edition of our Monthly Fiber Update. We want to thank you for your support in this mission; we couldn’t do it without you!
All our best,
The Rock Island Team
