Monthly Fiber Update: May 2018
Gig Internet is Here!
You can now get 1,000 megabits per second in your home!
When we started this fiber effort about three years ago, the average Internet speeds in the county were between 2–4 Mbps download, and about .5 Mbps upload. Few had more; many had less. Now consider the fact that the FCC’s definition of broadband is 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps up, and you can see how far behind we have been as a rural island community.
After a lot of hard work and network upgrades all over the county, we are proud to announce that we now can offer a full Gigabit to our residential customers! Can you imagine what it would feel like to go from 2–4 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps?
When getting ready to introduce our new Gigabit rate plan, we took the time to increase speeds across our entire fiber-optic product line, with a range of symmetrical rate plans from 30 Mbps, 75 Mbps, 500 Mbps to a Gigabit (1,000 Mbps).
We’re Giving You More
Prices for full-time residents still range from $80 to $180 per month, but now include up to $60/month of value-added products and services including a managed mesh network Wi-Fi system, Rock Island email addresses, cyber-security coverage for devices, and cloud backup and storage. Bonus items vary based on rate plan selection. You can view the details of our fiber plans and their bonus items on our fiber rates page.
Why give you more? We have learned a lot in the past few years, and one of those things is that having a great Internet connection is critical, but right along that is the ability to taking advantage of that connection – and making sure your online experience is safe.
We have bundled in some services that will help your home Wi-Fi get into every room and floor you wish and protect all those phones and computers from the challenges of today’s complex and persistent cyber-attacks. We want to have a healthy online life, and this is our way of looking out for you where we can.
We Upgraded Some Already
We were able to automatically upgrade some of our current fiber customers to our new rate plans when the cost was the same or less.
- If you were on our full time or 6-month seasonal 25/25 Mbps plan, we upgraded you to our new 30/30 Mbps plan
- If you were on our full time 100/100 or 200/200 Mbps plans, we upgraded you to our new 500/500 and Gig plans respectively
- Be sure to call us to collect your free upgrade items!
Other new rate plans saw an increase on average of $4 month. As a result, we didn’t presume to upgrade you without your consent (and to be clear, you don’t have to upgrade; you can stay on your existing fiber plans as long as you wish). But if you do want to upgrade, just give us a call and we’ll turn up the dial for you – plus you’ll get some fantastic bonus items for free!
Any home fiber customer can upgrade to a Gigabit or any other new rate plan now by calling Rock Island at 360-378-5884 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. A plan change is simple, and speed changes take about 20 minutes to take effect after activation.
*please note, we cannot upgrade fiber customers to the 500 or Gig plan who are supplied by a wireless connection like Brown Island, Eagle Lake, etc.

Please mark your calendars for a celebration party on June 29th, from 12 – 5 pm. We’re rolling out the red carpet once again as a thank you to our community for all the support in Friday Harbor, and throughout the county!
We’ll be cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs and have plenty of drinks and chips – all for free. Come on down and grab some lunch and let us shake your hand. We feel lucky to have been greeted so warmly in the community since our relaunch of the Rock Island store. We’ve been connecting LTE customers and setting folks up with T-Mobile phone plans for almost one year now and the journey has been fantastic!
